Gugulethu Cleopas Ndlovu (18), the son of convicted musician Sipho 'Brickz' Ndlovu is following in his father's footsteps and getting into the music industry. Gugulethu has been a Amapiano DJ for more than a year and has also ventured into music production.
LIKE FATHER LIKE SON
His father named him after his mentor Cleopas 'DJ Ceo' Monyepao, who helped change his life and open doors in his music career. Although Gugulethu says his dad is not too keen on him doing music, he can't escape that it runs in his blood. "It's embedded in me. I got it from my father," Gugulethu tells ZiMoja. "I got the musical gene from him and I can't ignore it."
VISITING DAD IN JAIL
Brickz is currently serving a 15-year jail term at Leeuwkop Maximum Facility, for raping his 17-year-old relative in 2013. Gugulethu says he visits his dad in jail almost twice a month and on almost every visit, his dad warns him about the "dangerous music industry" and how he should stay far away. "He tells me all the horror stories about drugs, alcohol and the dangers of the industry. I listen and I hear the warnings, but we are a different generation," he says. "We have learned from their past mistakes. I don't plan on doing some of those things. I have my dreams and visions." Gugulethu says he loves music and his mom supports him. "As long as I do well at school, then I am good."
GOALS
His mom Lindiwe Rose Nkosi has set ground rules for him when it comes to music. "No late nights during the week. I need to do well at school and always be in safe environments." He is currently in Grade 11 and plans to study music or IT after Grade 12. "It seems like music is winning but I will see. I am doing very well at school. I am not those musicians who don't believe in getting an education, that think talent alone is good not enough, I want to study after high school, and become an international star."
