The police in the Western Cape have made a breakthrough in the missing case of Joshlin Smith who disappeared on 19 February. The police have revealed that two men have confessed to selling the Saldanha Bay minor for muthi. The police have since identified four persons of interest and have taken them in for questioning. The six-year-old old grade 1 learner from Saldanha Bay went missing on the 19th of February after her mother Kelly left her in the care of her boyfriend when she went to work.
A massive search operation involving various police units, the South African Navy and community members has been ongoing for the past two weeks. Police spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potelwa says arrests can be expected as the police have taken in four men for questioning. Two of the men made a confession saying they sold the girl for muti. Netwerk24 sources told the publication that the suspects allegedly confessed to have sold the girl to a man in Middelpos for R20 000. "The four are between the ages of 26 and 34. It is envisaged that with the process being undertaken, light will be shed as to what happened to the six-year-old girl. With the investigation unfolding, arrests are on the cards."
Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Malcolm Pojie confirmed on Sunday that clothing, a sheet and a knife wre been found late on Saturday evening in an open field about a kilometre away from where Joshlin and her two siblings lived with her mother Kelly and her mother's boyfriend Jacquin Appollis. "The investigation team descended on the scene where the pieces of clothing were seized as part of ongoing investigation, The clothing will be sent to our forensic laboratory for analysis, "said Poje.
