A former soccer player turned boxer is accused of selling a stolen car to a friend. The KwaZulu Natal-born middleweight boxer Phikelelani Khumalo who used to play for Golden Arrows FC allegedly sold the car to a friend he met on Facebook.
Speaking to ZiMoja, the friend who also hails from KZN says he met Phikelelani on Facebook and there was an instant connection, little did he know it would end in tears. "We clicked because we are both from KZN and we share a surname. We referred to each other as bafo (brother)," said Nkosikhona Khumalo . He added that they exchanged numbers and started hanging out. According to Nkosikhona, trouble started last year in July when Phikelelani told him he was selling a car. He says he was excited about the car and took out his life savings. "I bought the car from Phikelelani for R32 000 and I paid him in cash," he said. But his dreams of having his own wheels were short-lived when Phikelelani came to his house with the cops claiming that the car was stolen.
He says because he trusted his homeboy and looked up to him, he decided to surrender the car, hoping to get his cash back or another car. "He then took the car back and never paid back my money." He says he feels used by the sportsman. "He basically swindled me of my money and I want it back," he says. The pissed-off Nkosikhona says he now can't reach the boxer on his phone and he has since moved houses. "I have been trying to call him but he keeps on giving me excuse and after excuse," Nkosikhona said, adding that he was told he is now hiding in Alexandra.
When called for comment, Phikelelani did not deny owing Nkosikhona money, he says due to his financial troubles, he is not able to pay at the moment. "I don't have any income at the moment, I am struggling to make ends meet, once I am financially ok, will pay him," he says. He also adds that used to financially support Nkosikhona when he used to have money. "I used to help him out with groceries and other things, I even have proof of the transaction," he added.
