The Durban University of Technology is mourning the passing of a student who went missing on Freedom Day, 27th of April. He body was found at Durban Port on Monday and it's clear he had been murdered.
Siyanda Shazi from Esikhaleni township, north of KwaZulu Natal, was found killed and dumped in the sea on Monday after he disappeared during the day he was involved in a fight with bouncers at Paradise Action Bar in Albert Park. It is alleged that Siyanda was with his friends when he met his death.
According to his father Phakama Shazi, Siyanda was murdered like a dog and thrown into the sea.
"We were under the impression that our son was at university when we received a message that someone had posted on Facebook asking for anyone with our contact numbers. We responded to that Facebook and the boy told us he was with Siyanda on the day he disappeared. He told us what happened on the day he disappeared. He told us that they were at Paradise Action Tavern playing snooker when an altercation happened between Siyanda and the bouncers. He said that the bouncers beat him and took him outside. A few minutes later the bouncers came back but he said he went outside to check on Siyanda but he was nowhere to be found," the father said.
Shazi further said that on Monday they went to Durban to the tavern where Siyanda was last seen. "There was no one who was willing to explain what happened on the night my son disappeared. Everyone who works there kept saying they don't remember what happened on that day as it was packed and it was a holiday. I suspect that they are covering for each other. They even refused to let the cops watch footage that was captured on the night of the incident. We are hurt as my son was not a violent person," he said. On Monday the family received a call from the police alerting the Shazi family that they might have found their son. They were called to identify the body and unfortunately it was him. His killers had dumped his body at sea. KZN SAPS spokesperson Robert Netshiunda confirmed the incident.
"Maydon Wharf police have opened an inquest docket for investigation after a body of a 26-year-old unknown man was found floating in the sea at Durban Harbour on 29 April 2023. The body was later identified as that of a student who had gone missing," he said.
