The City of Joburg Emergency Services (EMS) has called off an intensive nine-day search for a Cosmo City woman who was washed away by floods while driving on Rivonia Road through Sunninghill on January 12. EMS said it has handed the matter over to the South African Police Service.
EMS spokesperson Xolile Khumalo said the EMS Aquatic Team (supported by SAPS, ZASRA, GPG, National Rescue South Africa and Gauteng Traffic Police) embarked on an extensive search and rescue operation that lasted for nine days. However, the body was not recovered during this period. "After at least five days in water, the body of a drowned person is expected to surface. If it does not surface, it is suspected that the body is immersed in sand or debris. The worst-case scenario could be that the body floated to a nearby river that is outside Johannesburg jurisdiction," said Khumalo.
Khumalo said the EMS has urged and requested the neighbouring municipality to be on a lookout for the body. "EMS has since handed the case to SAPS to continue the investigation. Our heartfelt sympathy is extended to the family during this time. And we would like to take this opportunity to thank all entities who supported the operation and the community of Sandton who showed us love by providing refreshments and food." Khumalo added that the woman's family was notified of the latest status of the case on Sunday by EMS senior management.
