Food has always been one of his many passions. It goes head-to-head with being on stage and entertaining. Amstel Maboa, the only surviving member of gay group 3Sum is set to open his own culinary business named, Dijong Tsa Amstel in Mamelodi East, Tshwane.

A LOVE FOR FOOD

In his new business venture, he will specialise in African cuisine which is warm and hearty meals. "I explored my cooking style and my unique taste when I was in tertiary. I have been cooking and entertaining friends and family for years. People can expect flavoursome food at the new restaurant, made by both me and my mom. It is warm and welcoming space where people can enjoy delicious traditional food and connect."

Amstel tells ZiMoja that he has always loved cooking and his family has always been in the culinary industry. "My family has been in the catering and decor business for more than 20 years, so this is second nature to me. It was a matter of time before I joined them," he says. "From a very young age, I spent a lot of time watching my mother cook and bake, but my interest was more in baking."

But he confesses that he can never choose between music and food. "The two go hand in hand. I will never choose; I love both equally," he says.

OTHER MEANS OF INCOME

The music industry and staying relevant while making a living hasn't been easy for Amstel and many others in his generation, but he keeps his head up, by finding different streams of income. "The music industry is not easy and despite its challenges, performing on stage brings me immense joy," he adds. "I have realised that I can't only survive with music when I have other talents, so I use every gift God has given me. I am not 20 years anymore and being versatile makes sense. So, décor and food sustain me and my family."
