Gay socialite and singer Amstel Maboa is the latest celebrity to join EFF. He follows in the footsteps of the likes of Linda Sibiya, Ntando Duma, Uncle Vinny, MP Eugene Mthethwa and Tshedi Mholo. The move by Amstel, a renowned band member associated with the gay group 3Sum, has taken the music industry by surprise, as he has never previously shown an interest in politics.
Amstel has been an instrumental figure in the LBTQ+ and music industry for over two decades with a long-standing career in the band. The group has won several awards over the years and has amassed a dedicated fan base. Speaking to ZiMoja he said he decided to join EFF because of its values and beliefs but most importantly, its support of the rainbow community. "I have been a fan of Juju since he was in the ANC Youth League. He has always embraced and empowered my community," he adds. Amstel said he has given up on ANC's empty promises. As a performer, he feels that ANC favours certain celebrities. "They only use us during their campaigns after that we don't exist, it is back to business. They only acknowledge us only when they need us," he added. Amstel who runs the Amstel Foundation said he relied on community business people to get by. Amstel said he always mentioned that he wanted to use his platform to bring about change and make a positive impact in society but the ANC has not created that platform. "As the rainbow society, we are also part of the society- I want to vote for a party that is concerned about our needs as a society and EFF is doing just that. There are many LGBTQ projects they are endorsing especially in our townships, I was touched by their passion," she adds
The EFF has welcomed Amstel stating that they are thrilled to have such a talented and passionate individual join their cause. Through their statement, Eugene Mthethwa said it is a good thing that they now see artists, actors, and radio and TV presenters consciously and boldly joining their party. "This is an indication of their realisation that they need to be actively involved in deciding their future which shall be influenced by political debates, regulatory framework and policies developed by them," read the statement.
