The defence for accused number five advocate Zandile Mshololo has questioned the credibility of cellphone data analyst Lambertus Steyn. Steyn is on the stand giving evidence in the Senzo Meyiwa trial at the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria.
Steyn revealed through cellphone evidence that accused number five Fisokuhle Ntuli made a series of calls to Kelly Khumalo months before Senzo Meyiwa was killed. When Mshololo asked Steyn if it was verified that the number belonged or was linked to her client, he said all relevant checks were done. "It's been identified by the investigations team and like I mentioned on the first day of my testimony. It was also picked up by profiling the suspects, however, the number was not saved on Kelly's phone." Steyn said in his career, his evidence has never been rejected by any court. He said despite his qualifications, he attends refresher courses on a regular basis where he is lectured by other experienced analysts.
The state called a new witness Sergeant Moses Mabasa. Mabasa told the court that he downloaded the cellphone data that was analysed by cellphone expert Steyn. He said his work includes analysing cellphone records as well as testifying in courts on a regular basis. He said Mabasa says he was asked by Brigadier Gininda (Colonel at the time) to "compile the pictures" that he would find on the cellphone or memory card which was handed to him. The phone he says belonged to accused 3, Mthobisi Mncube. The state led the witness through a list of pictures he found in accused 3's phone, which included pictures of money and pictures of people. Mabasa said: "One of the pictures found in the suspect's phone was a picture of a gun, "saved as my killing machine". A picture of a silver and gold firearm. 9mm pistol. In another picture, I see a gentleman with dreadlocks and an earring, wearing a jacket or lumber. Is it beige or what?" The trial continues.
