Zuma vs Ramaphosa's private prosecution case has been postponed to May

Former President Jacob Zuma's case for his private prosecution against President Cyril Ramaphosa was postponed to May 26. Ramaphosa was granted an urgent interdict on Monday which meant that he does not have to appear in the criminal court as an accused on Thursday.

 

PRIVATE PROSECUTION

 

Zuma is charging Ramaphosa for allegedly being an accessory after the fact in his case against State prosecutor Billy Downer and Journalist Karyn Maughan. The former President is accusing the two of leaking his confidential medical records and he is charging Ramaphosa for not acting against them.

 

COURT APPEARANCE

The cheerful Zuma attended t he court case at the Johannesburg High Court. Jimmy Manyi from the Jacob Zuma Foundation said according to Section 11 of criminal procedure act, if a private prosecutor doesn't show up in court, the matter automatically falls off. "Zuma was there in person to make sure that the matter doesn't fall off as he is serious about the prosecution," Manyi said. He added that there had to be a way forward and for Zuma's legal team to update the court on the in the intervening period there was a judgement by the civil court that determined that President Ramaphosa must be excused from the proceedings pending Part B case," Manyi s aid.

APPEAL

Speaking to ZiMoja after the postponement, Manyi said that Zuma will appeal the decision that was taken by the civil court on Monday ruling in favour of Ramaphosa.
