WELL established businesswoman Zama Phakathi Rambau is coming from humble beginnings.
Born in Hammarsdale outside Durban in KwaZulu Natal, Zama recently launched his her Splendid Cover two weeks ago.
Speaking Zimoja, Phakathi Rambau who is the CEO of Splendid Marketing and Communications said the journey to be a successful businesswoman was not a rosy one.
"Basically I started off in Marketing & PR, after having been the Marketing & Communications Manager for the Durban Chamber from 2006 to 2009. I was encouraged to get into Business then, having serviced the Business Community so closely and so intensely for couple of years in KZN. I then decided to pursue my own business life through Splendlid Marketing & Communications in 2009. And over the years, we’ve evolved and diversified into other sectors including IT and Insurance and expanded into Gauteng and beyond," said Phakathi Rambau.
Phakathi Rambau said that Marketing & PR is not as capital extensive as some other sectors.
"I was able to start small, with the basic resources I had and I was also working from home initially, and eventually from a shared office space. Then in 2010 I was very fortunate to score good contracts and to also to work in some 2010 World Cup projects, which then enabled me to expand properly, to onboard a good team of staff, and to have independent offices," she said.
Phakathi Rambau said that it was a combination of dynamics that motivated her to become a businesswoman.
"I was brought up in an entrepreneurial family. My parents were in multiple retail businesses, which we worked for with my siblings during some weekends and all the school holidays. Also my Dad always firmly encouraged me to be a business person when I grow up. Further to that, whilst I was at the Durban Chamber I met a lot of incredible business leaders, some of whom really inspired me and literally encouraged and pushed me to get into business. They were so certain I’m destined for business and that I would make it! I remain eternally grateful to them and their encouragement & support.," said Phakathi Rambau.
Phakathi Rambau further said: "My motto in business life is never have one income stream. Splendlid Group survived COVID because of that. Whilst our marketing business was pretty quiet during COVID, other businesses were busy hence we pulled through pretty well."
