Winning from the grave

Zahara’s family proud of her nomination

She continues to inspire, even from the grave. Late singer and songwriter, Bulelwa “Zahara” Mkutukana has been nominated twice at the South African Afro Music Awards. The singer passed away in December 2023 following liver complications. She had been hospitalised for about three weeks before passing on.


NOMINATED


The Loliwe has been nominated for Best Female Afro Soul Artist Of Democracy and her 2011 debut album, Loliwe, is nominated for Best Afro Album Of Democracy at the South African Afro Music Awards, which will take place on 26 October at the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg, Ekurhuleni. She goes against singers; Zonke Dikana, Siphokazi, Judith Sephuma, Moneoa and Thandiswa Mazwai. Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Chicco Twala, Lindelani Mkhize, Mandisa Dlanga, Thapelo Khomo and Sam Mhangwani are set to receive lifetime achievement awards.


DESERVING


Zahara’s sister Bandezwa, told ZiMoja that her family couldn’t be prouder. “My sister’s work will live on forever. She deserves to be celebrated,” she said. “She has worked hard and we hope to attend and if she wins, we can accept the award on her behalf.”
