Why we do the content we do?

Bokani Moyo is the Head of Moja TV Channels

Moja Love (DStv Channel 157) has been on air for just under five years and we have firmly established ourselves as a disruptor in the local content and entertainment space. Our mission is to create content that is authentic to the lived experience of our communities.  We have a specific focus on the marginalised communities that do not feature in the media as a norm.  One of the side effects of not being visible in the media (even in content primarily designed as entertainment) is that the rest of society are able to deny your existence, your issues and your right to be heard.  As a broadcaster we set out to engage our viewers and to provide a platform - to see themselves and experience it in the REAL…

We are on a quest for the holy grail of relatability and authenticity. We have learnt that once our content resonates with our viewers at an emotional and sometimes even spiritual level ?" it will be difficult for our competitors to emulate us. As Moja Love we celebrate the communities in which we were born and through highlighting and advocating for matters that still cripple our families we seek to find tangible solutions that will change the narrative for the next generation.

Moja Love's production community is made up of teams that are young and as it turns out black and mainly women content curators that are driven to deliver stories that were previously spoken about ONLY in hushed tones ?" Why? ?" because we believe that without confronting the social ills and raising them to the surface, they remain buried and are passed on from generation to generation.

Which is why we as Moja Love have decided to extend the content offering to Zimoja Lezinto (or just Zimoja).  I believe Zimoja will continue the legacy that the Moja Love team has fought so hard to create. ZiMoja as an online news platform will continue to tell authentic South African stories and interrogate why it has been normalised that there is an us and them.

We understand that it is difficult to report on these stories and issues, but we refuse to become part of the culture that hides the terrible things that are happening or that shy away from confronting powerful people who do the wrong thing.  It is our view that once we shine a light on these things we take away some of their power and we enable to some degree the people that are suffering or those that are advocating to act. Zimoja will through holding people to account become a vehicle for enablement and empowerment.  We look forward to bringing news that will have you in awe, that will shock you, that will make you angry and sometimes we will also make you laugh.  We will not leave you unmoved.  Join our Moja community.
