She is a seasoned newsreader and was a fan favourite in most of the TV roles she played. On Igazi, she portrayed the role of evil Nomarussia, desperate to take dethrone the queen. On Generations, she played Ma'mfundisiand her last role was on Muvhango, where she played the role of vengeful Moliehi. She has had several other roles, where she demonstrated her versatility. While viewers saw perfect portrayals of her on-screen characters, Vatiswa Ndara started to reveal the dark layers in the background and the challenges faced by actors in South Africa.
After three years away from TV screens, Vatiswa has since released her second book titled Unfiltered which documents her life from the day she was born in 1970. Her first book titled I Am Because of You is a collection of messages from fans, supporters, and colleagues which includes a foreword by late award-winning musician SibongileKhumalo, personal messages from veteran producer Roberta Durrant, Zikhona Sodlaka, and poet Xoli Nosenga.
TELLING IT LIKE IT IS?
Vatiswa tells ZiMojathat, Unfiltered will shock many people. "I know there are people who will not be happy with what I have shared in the book, but it needed to be done,' she says. "After three years of being unemployed due to being vocal, I have moved passed thinking about money and income. Now, it's about sharing my story.' Unfiltered is dedicated to her late parents, Reverend St John Page Thozamile and Princess Nomfundo Ndara. It is a blow-by-blow rundown of her life. "I have taken quite a challenging step and dared to write this book. I am sure, you are as both as shocked as I am to put pen to paper and document my journey. But I also know how proud you are of me,' Vatiswa writes in the dedication to her parents. "This book is also dedicated to those whose hard work and dedication are never shown any appreciation, instead met with resistance and hostility mostly by those who benefit from it,' she says. Before getting into the rollercoaster ride that is her life, Vatiswa starts the book from the day she was born in Middleburg in the Eastern Cape?
CANCELLED BY PRODUCTION HOUSES
She left the acting world cringing after exposing in an open letter to the Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Nathi Mthethwa details of some of the unfair labour practices, bad working conditions, unfair treatment by production houses, and poor remuneration. The minister shared a statement addressing claims of alleged exploitation. "It is unfortunate that the voices of the artists that have benefited from the department now known as Sports, Arts, and Culture can not present when criticism of lack of support is leveled against the department and Minister Mthethwa as its head.'
Vatiswa says, she doubts she will ever work as an actress again in South Africa but she urges people to read her book to find out why. "I was cancelled the minute I started speaking up. I am fully aware of the fact that no one is going to hire me now, especially not after reading this book. My experiences will leave jaws on the floor,' she adds.
