The public is called upon to help stop the senseless killings of police officers. This after two officers from Boksburg North were disarmed and killed by unknown men on last night . Police have since launched a manhunt for the perpetrators and have asked the public to intervene. According to SAPS spokeswoman Athlenda Mathe a 29-year-old constable and a 45-year-old sergeant were on duty and waiting for a mortuary van when they were attacked. "They were responding to a complaint of an unnatural death when they were accosted by three men,"said Mathe.
PISTOLS AND BULLET PROOF STOLEN
She added that after shooting the officers, the suspects fled on foot taking with them the deceased's service pistols and bullet proof vests. "All role players have been activated, and a manhunt is underway to apprehend those who are behind the attack, as well as the recovery of the two state firearms and two bulletproof vests."The National Commissioner of the South African Police Service (Saps) General Fannie Masemola has condemned the killing of the officers.
PUBLIC MUST PLAY ACTIVE ROLE
He sent his condolences to the family and colleagues of the deceased. "We believe that such incidents can be prevented. We will not rest until we find those behind the attack. The killing of officers in the line of duty and taking their service pistols undermines the authority of the state and the proper functioning of the criminal justice system," said Masemola, adding that they will work on reviewing their police safety strategy and plan accordingly, but in the meantime they are urging the public to play an active role in search for the suspects.
"We believe that such incidents can be prevented. We will not rest until we find those behind the attack and killing of police officers," he concluded.
