Tributes pour in for late veteran US singer Harry Belafonte

Dr John Kani shares a tribute to the late US artists

Music lovers across the world are at a loss after the death of US music legend Harry Belafonte. The Banana Boat singer who was 96, is reported to have died at his home on the Upper West Side of Manhattan on Tuesday. He is survived by his third wife, Pamela, his daughters Shari, Adrienne and Gina; and his son David.

MAKING HISTORY

Harry broke the pop music charts in the 1950s with hits from his albums Calypso in 1956. He is said to have paved the way for everyone from the Beatles to Drake. Born in Harlem to West Indian parents, he is said to have put Caribbean music on the map. Harry's music was essential in the '60s civil rights movement, and he also was reported to have embarked on charitable activities on behalf of underdeveloped African nations. He spoke openly about opposing South African apartheid policies. 

TRIBUTES POUR IN

Tributes have come pouring in for the multi-Grammy Awards winner, who also has received the Recording Academy's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2000, and a Tony.
