Police Minister Bheki Cele has appointed an award winning top cop Brigadier Vela Cele to lead an investigation into the murders of Kiernan 'AKA' Forbes and his friend and former manager Tebello 'Tibz' Montsoane. The two were shot dead on February 10 in Durban, KwaZulu Natal.
AN AWARD-WINNING TEAM
Brigadier Cele tracked down Luyanda Botha (46) who murdered UCT student Uyinene Mrwetyana (19) in August 2019 within ten days. Luyanda was arrested after he raped and murdered Uyinene at the Clareinch post office in Claremont, Cape Town. The police were conducting a routine patrol in Lingelethu West, they came across the remains of Uyinene's body. The former post office worker is serving a life sentence for murder, and two life sentences on both counts of rape, and will not be eligible for parole for 25 years. The police say they are treating AKA and Tibz case with the same precision. Brigadier Cele was honoured for his contribution in Botha's arrest in 2020.
THE INVESTIGATIONS
Cellphone records, ballistic reports, videos, and statements are currently being collected in finding the killers of rapper Kiernan "AKA' Forbes and Tebello "Tibz' Montsoane who were gunned down outside a restaurant on Florida Road in Durban. The two were shot dead after an embrace and were ready to go their separate ways. Two shooters are seen on CCTV footage approaching the shooting, shooting the two at close range. AKA and Tibz have since been buried in private ceremonies for family and close friends. AKA was buried on Heroes Acre at Westpark Cemetery and Tibz on the same day at his home in Ekurhuleni.
GATHERING EVIDENCE
The South African Police Service has been gathering evidence including cellphone records which could play an important role in linking the police to the suspects. KZN Police commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi confirms to ZiMoja that they have interviewed several people present and not present on the day of the crime in order to solve the case. "We are gathering all evidence, and thoroughly analysing the CCTV footage and videos in order to for us to have a solid case,' says Mkhwanazi.
