Senzo Meyiwa murder trial postponed once again

Senzo Meyiwa’s murder trial has been marred by postponements

There seems to be no end in sight in the Senzo Meyiwa trial. The murder trial against five men accused of murdering the former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper in October 2014 has been postponed, once again. The trial was adjourned until Monday to allow the defence time to go over data retrieved from the cellphones of two of the accused. When court resumed today, Advocate Zandile Mshololo, the defence for accused number 5, completed her cross examination with key witness Constable Sizwe Zungu.

CELLPHONE DATA

The court heard that the state aims to call a cellphone analyst who will testify about the downloads on the phones confiscated from accused 2 and 5 but the reports were only made available last week Friday. The defence only received these reports on Monday and have asked for two days to go over them and take instructions.

STAND DOWN

Although Advocate Mshololo has completed her cross examination, she has asked for Zungu to be recalled in order for her to show him the dates when the picture in question was taken. However, the judge asked the witness to stand down for now. "The picture was taken on the 26th of October at 17:25. They were a set of three taken between 17:00 and 17:30. It was taken at George Goch and not Vosloorus. Accused number 5 says he never went to Sotho hostel in Volsoorus. From around 17:00 when that picture was taken, he moved to his flat where he was staying in Joburg CBD. At no point did he go to the hostel. He denies going to Gwabini’s room. He also denies having a relative by the name of Nkazimulo Ntuli. He has no siblings from his mother’s side, "said Mshololo. Zungu maintained that he met the accused at the hostel. He was also asked about his meeting with the lead investigator in the Senzo’s murder case Colonel Joyce Buthelezi and his response was: "Colonel Buthelezi did not ask me much about the suspects. The emphasis was more on the Khumalo family and what I know about them. She also told me that she was investigating the second docket." Court resumes on Monday.
