Katlego Bereng, whose body was charred in convicted cell Thabo Bester's as part of his escape plan was finally laid to rest yesterday after the authorities released his remains to his family. The service was held at the Lesley Monnayana Hall in Mangaung, Bloemfontein. Scores of Bloemfontein Celtics supporters were in attendance and sang their hearts out in celebration of their member's life.
A PAWN IN A GAME
Investigations have thus far revealed that he died from a blunt force trauma to the head and was already dead when his body was placed in Bester's cell and burnt. Bester escaped from prison on the 3rd of May last year with the help of prison warders and his lover Nandipha Magudumana, who took possession of Bereng's body by pretending to be Bester's wife.

Emotions ran high when Bereng's inconsolable mother walked towards her son's coffin, grabbed his picture held it close and hugged it. She struggled to let it go. Meanwhile, Bloemfontein Celtics supporters dressed in their full regalia took turns singing and dancing around Bereng's coffin, because that's what he liked to do.The National Prosecuting Authority has since withdrawn the charge of murder against Bester and Dr Nandipha Magudumana.
