The lawyer representing two of the accused in the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial has asked for the matter to be postponed to next week after he fell ill while cross examining a state witness.
POSTPONEMENT
Advocate Sipho Ramosepele told the court that he was not feeling well and asked for a postponement, hardly an hour after the trial resumed on Friday morning. "Therefore, I'd like to request the court that the matter be adjourned until Monday, then I'll be fit and proper to come and continue." Ramosepele said. Senzo was gunned down in 2014 at his baby mama's house. The soccer star was dating singer Kelly Khumalo at the time. The accused Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya, Bongani Sandiso Ntanzi, Mthobisi Prince Mncube, Mthokoziseni Maphisa and Sifisokuhle Nkani Ntuli are charged with premeditated murder, attempted murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, possession of firearms without a licence and possession of ammunition. They have all pleaded not guilty.
CONTRADICTORY STATEMENTS
On Thursday, Thwala's testimony was found to be contradicting what he had told the police back in 2014 after the murder. Before Thwala completed giving his evidence in chief of what unfolded on that fateful night, state prosecutor Advocate George Baloyi pointed out discrepancies in three different statements that were made to the police by the witness. In one of the statements, Thwala detailed how Chicco Twala's son, Longwe who at the time was Zandi Khumalo's boyfriend, tried to fight the intruder who had the gun. "Then Zandi's boyfriend let go of the firearm, which was still in the suspect's hand. Zandi's boyfriend went towards the first person that was in the house, pushed him and that went out." The matter will resume on Monday 8 May.
