SAFA boss seeks to have charges against him dropped

SAFA boss and co-accused intend to have charges against them dropped today

The president of the South African Football Association (SAFA), who has stolen the limelight for the wrong reasons, Danny Jordaan, is expected to launch an application to have charges against him dropped before the Commercial Crimes Court in Palm Ridge, in Ekurhuleni, today. Jordaan and two other accused SAFA chief financial officer Gronie Hluyo (55) and businessman Trevor Neethling (46) are facing fraud and theft charges amounting to about R1.3 million.

HE WANTS TO WALK FREE

As he makes his 3rd appearance in court, Jordaan is set to apply for his charges to be dropped in terms of the Criminal Procedures Act Section 342A of the Criminal Procedure Act, which reads as follows: "A court before which criminal proceedings are pending shall investigate any delay in the completion of proceedings that appears to the court to be unreasonable and which could cause substantial prejudice to the prosecution, the accused or his/her legal adviser, the State, or a witness." Last week, Jordaan and his co-accused appeared before the court for the disclosure of the docket by the State.

REPUTATIONS AT STAKE

The defence counsel of Jordaan and his co-accused, Arendse, told the court last week that they intended to argue that because of another ongoing legal battle between SAFA and the State, there may be a delay in the outcome of this particular case. He said the proceeds which may be lengthy for this matter may cause reputational damage to his clients, even if they were ultimately found to be innocent.
