Advocate Thando Gumede has been appointed as the new chairperson and commissioners for the commission for gender equality while advocate Nthabiseng Sepanya-Mogale will chair the commission from 1st March on a full-time basis. 

ANNOUNCEMENT

President Cyril Ramaphosa made the announcement on Saturday in terms of section 3(9) of the Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) Act, 1996 (Act No. 39 of 1996) as amended. The CGE is established in terms of Section 187 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa to promote respect for gender equality and the protection, development, and attainment of gender equality in South Africa.

NEW CGE COMMISSIONERS 

The President has appointed the commission chairperson and commissioners as follows: Adv Olave Nthabiseng Sepanya ?"Mogale as the commission's chairperson on a full-time basis, Adv Thando Gumede as a full-time member of the commission, Bongani Glenton Ngomane as a part-time member of the commission, Ms Leelambal (Prabashni) Subrayan Naidoo as a part-time member of the commission and Leonashia Leigh- Anne van der Merwe as a part-time member of the commission. The newly elected members will start their duties from 01 March 2023 to 28 February 2028. The elected candidates underwent interviews in September 22 and were picked out of 24 candidates. 

FIVE YEAR TERM

 The candidates are all on a 5-year contract. During the selection process the committee considered the geographic spread and demographics of the candidates, as well as gender and disability in keeping with the criteria espoused in the Constitution and the Commission for Gender Equality Act. In a statement, Ramaphosa said he wished the newly appointed members of the commission well in their work and roles.
