One of the two convicted rapists who escaped from Engqeleni prison in the Eastern Cape on Freedom Day, has been re-arrested. The two inmates who were both convicted of rape escaped at the sports field on that day.
RE-ARRESTED
The Department of Correctional Services spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo confirmed that one of the two escapees, Siyabulela Khohliso, was arrested in the Libode area and transferred to the Mthatha Correctional Centre on Monday. Khohliso was serving 10 years behind bars for a rape charge. Another inmate who escaped with Khohliso, Athini Nothi Mzingelwa is still at large. Mzingelwa was serving an eight-year sentence when he escaped. "All efforts are now focused on finding Athini Nothi Mzingelwa," said Nxumalo.
OFFICIALS SUSPENDED
On Monday, the National Commissioner of the Department of Correctional Services Makgothi Thobakgale visited the eNgqeleni Correctional facility. "He announced the suspension of eight officials who were on duty on the day of the escape. Two additional officials have been issued with notice of suspension. The investigation is ongoing, and more developments are expected, " added Nxumalo. Members of the public are urged to contact the nearest police station if they come into contact with the other escapee.
