Northern Cape government is working tirelessly to end the scourge of illegal mining

In a move to fight the scourge of zamazamas in the Nothern Cape, the SAPS, NPA and other law enforcement agencies will host an information sharing session at a local hall in Kleinzee today (Tuesday)in a fight to eradicate the scourge of illegal mining.

The ongoing fight that is currently advancing in the Namaqua, particularly in the former diamond mining towns of Kleinzee and Port Nolloth, which are found closer to the border of South Africa and the neighbouring country of Namibia. Numerous multidisciplinary tactical operations led by Law Enforcement Agencies within the South African Police Service, National Prosecuting Authority, and Home Affairs have been undertaken in trying to protect not only the environment but most importantly the citizenry of the Namaqua.

Northern Cape National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Mojalefa Senokoatsane said that during these operations, large quantities of mining tools and money amounting to more than a million were confiscated. "In Springbok, they confiscated 114 generators and 59 jackhammers, 27 shovels, 32 hammers, and loose drilling bits which soon go to auction. The Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU) of the National Prosecuting Authority obtained orders for those tools. The 110 generators, and 120 jackhammers are kept safe at the Kleinzee SAP 13 and AFU is drafting a preservation order. At Port Nolloth SAP 13, there are currently 40 generators and 100 jackhammers awaiting the finalization of the preservation order by AFU. "These tools are all alleged to be utilized for illegal mining activities within the area. As part of the continuous fight against illegal mining activities within the Namaqua Area, The NPA together with SAPS will be hosting an Information Sharing Session with the communities of Kleinzee on 12 March 2024, at the Kleinzee Community Hall on Tuesday,? he said. Senokoatsane said that on the 13th of March 2024, the NPA together with SAPS will host a media briefing at the Kleinzee Police Station that will be followed by a walkabout at the Kleinzee SAP13 as well as Police guided operation at the Illegal Mining Areas within the town of Kleinzee.
