The funeral of Kiernan "AKA' Forbes will not be streamed or open to extended friends and fans. Many did not get a chance to bid him farewell at his memorial service held at the Sandton Convention Centre yesterday due to tickets being fully booked or not being on the guest list. Many were hoping to stream the rapper's funeral in the comfort of their own homes where they can cry and mourn in private. But this will not be the case, as the funeral proceedings will be strictly private and not be streamed or publicised.
A PRIVATE CEREMONY
A close friend of the Forbes family tells ZiMoja, they wanted to get their final goodbyes without the entire world watching. "They really want to get closure without public scrutiny or opinions from anyone. They want to bury their son in peace. They know he was loved, hence opening up his memorial service to the public and those who did not know him personally, " the friend says.
NO STREAMING
The family friend says that those who did not qualify to get a ticket in the 1800 seating venue for the memorial service would also not be allowed to attend the funeral. At the memorial service, many celebrities who had built personal relationships with AKA had to turn back due to not having accreditation. Veteran musician Mdu Masilelea was one of them and pastor Selwyn Ngwenya was another who was not happy after waiting two hours to be accredited and allowed in the venue. "Fans and friends who were not on the RSVP list were supposed to have gone online to sign up for the tickets before the fans did,' he says. "But no one informed them that the tickets would run out fast and they wouldn't be allowed into the venue.' The friends go on to say that even some media houses were not allowed in the venue. "Media houses that had covered Kiernan's career for years were not allowed in the venue unfortunately and this is the case with the funeral. The family has their own reasons, we just need to give them space to grieve.' AKA's PR team was not available for comment after several calls and text messages.
