No freedom for Oscar Pistorius as his parole is denied

Oscar Pistorius will serve the rest of his sentence

Former Paralympian Oscar Pistorius's application for parole has been denied. Pistorius has been behind bars for 10 years after he killed his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine's Day ten years ago. He fired four shots through his bathroom door claiming that he thought there was an intruder in the house. He was sentenced to 13 years and five months.

APPLICATION DENIED

Pistorius appeared before the Correctional Supervision and Parole Board at Atteridgeville Correctional Centre on Friday to apply for parole. However, according to the parole board, the accused is not ready to be released and will remain in prison. The Department of Correctional Services has released a statement saying that Pistorius will only be eligible for parole application in August 2024. "The Department of Correctional Services has received the decision of the Correctional Supervision and Parole Board (CSPB) on the parole consideration for inmate Oscar Leonard Pistorius. The CSPB granted inmate Pistorius a further profile for August 2024. The reason provided is that the inmate did not complete the minimum detention period as ruled by the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) (as per the clarification provided on 28 March 2023),' said the DCS.

DECISION CONFIRMED

The Steenkamp's legal representative Tania Koen said: "I can confirm that the parole board has made the decision, parole has been denied and they will be convening in a year's time to consider Oscar Pistorius for parole again," said Koen after the hearing. Koen said Pistorius was approved for parole consideration after serving more than half of his 13-year sentence. But Steenkamp's parents opposed an early release. As part of his rehabilitation, Pistorius met Steenkamp's parents last year in a process authorities said aimed to ensure inmates "acknowledge the harm they have caused to their victims and the society at large'. The Steenkamps had called for Pistorius to spend the rest of his life in jail.
