He has officially stepped down after defying his political party. African National Congress (ANC) Regional chairperson Mzwandile Masina who was the Mayor of the City of Ekurhuleni from 2016 to 2021 was facing disciplinary action by ANC leadership in Gauteng for compromising a possible coalition partnership with The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF). They had been in talks with the EFF for a possible takeover of some metros in Gauteng when a pre-mature motion of no confidence was tabled against the City's Mayor Tania Campbell. ?
MASINA DEFYING THE ANC
Masina defied his leaders ignoring an instruction to withdraw the motion of no-confidence. The motion tabled early in November was successful but for only a short while. Tania Campbell won the election and was re-elected as the Mayor after beating out the ANC's Jongizizwe Dlabathi, attaining 124 of the 224 votes. Following her victory, Campbell said, "It does show you there is confidence in me, but also it shows that the majority of council actually wants work to happen and wants stability within the city."?
A HOPEFUL EFF
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) were hopeful that the ANC would hand over all ropes to them after a successful coalition to remove Campbell.
Initially, the parties were said to have agreed on sharing their power but later the ANC couldn't deliver on their word, claiming EFF demands were too much because they wanted the Mayorship. Despite his resignation, Masina has his eye on a different price. He is gunning for the position of Treasure - General at the upcoming top six national conference.
ANC Gauteng spokesperson Lesego Makhubela confirms that Masina has decided to resign as a councillor. He explains that Masina will offer a public apology to members of the ANC and also that he has voluntarily decided to resign.
“The PWC wishes comrade Mzwandile well in his endeavors and thanks him for leading one of the most stable, innovative, and well-run municipalities for the past five years as a mayor,” Makhubela says.
