After several weeks of uncertainty, dozens of jobs have been saved for Muvhango cast and crew members. The 27-year-old soapie, which promotes Tshivenda culture, will be back on air after SABC 2 and Word of Mouth Pictures, the creators of the soapie unveiled what they call an exciting new chapter for the show at a media launch in Fourways, Joburg, last night.
CONTRACTS DRAMA
The last episode of the soapie aired on 2 July, with the public broadcaster replaying old episodes as they were still negotiating contracts with the show’s production company owned by Duma Ndlovu. ZiMoja previously reported that the contracts were meant to be signed in March, which is the end of the financial year, but nothing happened. A source close to the soapie told ZiMoja that the SABC was not happy with the Muvhango storyline and how Ndlovu was no longer paying attention to the soapie as he had long-term contracts with Mzansi Magic.
But a close source said bosses at the SABC decided to bring the soap opera back because fans were complaining and they realised that the slot had numbers and it was bringing in advertising. "Even the old seasons that were replayed after the last episode was aired were still bringing numbers," said the source.
NEW FACES
A new character joining Muvhango is seasoned Sarafina lead actress, Leleti Khumalo, who will be playing the character of Dr Nonhlanhla Ximba. In a statement, the production company said Leleti’s character is that of a construction mogul who is set to disrupt the familiar landscape of Muvhango, paving the way for unprecedented intrigue and groundbreaking storytelling. A relieved Duma Ndlovu, the executive producer of the TV series, said, "Muvhango lives on; it represents not just a new beginning but a celebration of the show’s legacy. We are dedicated to staying true to our roots while embracing change, and we are excited to present our audience with a Muvhango that reflects the rich diversity and compelling narratives of modern South Africa," Ndlovu said. Jacqui Hlongwane, acting head of channel at SABC 2, said as the public broadcaster, they are thrilled to support Muvhango in its exciting transformation. "The show has long been a pillar of our programming and we eagerly anticipate the infusion of fresh energy and captivating storytelling that Muvhango promises to bring to our viewers," Hlongwane said.
