Libyans arrested in illegal military training camp stripped off visas

An illegal military camp

The Department of Home Affairs has confirmed the cancellation of the visas of 95 Libyan nationals who were arrested at an illegal military training camp in Mpumalanga on Friday. The department said that those arrested were in possession of fraudulent visas and had entered South Africa through Tunisia.

ILLEGAL

Home Affairs explained that their visa cancellations meant that all those arrested Libyans are now undocumented foreign nationals.

"Home Affairs has already cancelled the irregularly acquired visas and is working with other law enforcement authorities to look at all options, including deportation," said department spokesperson Siya Qoza.

He added that preliminary investigations revealed that all 95 suspects misrepresented themselves on their visa applications, claiming to be coming to the country for training to be security guards.

EXPOSED

On Friday, a multi-disciplinary operation uncovered the camp on a secluded farm in White River and arrested men who were in a bogus military school.

In addition to the arrest military-grade training equipment, drugs and other contraband were discovered at the camp. Working together with Home Affairs department, police are investigating the matter.
