Learner stabbed in class by strangers

A learner was stabbed inside a classroom at Stanger South Secondary

Teachers and learners at the Stanger South High School in KwaDukuza in the north coast of KwaZulu Natal fear for their own safety after two strange men walked into the school yard, proceeded to a classroom and stabbed a learner in full view of his classmates. It's alleged that after the stabbing, the men who are not known, walked out of the school as if nothing happened. The incident took place on Thursday.

LEFT TRAUMATISED

A learner who didn't want to be named said they are still asking themselves questions as to how the men got into school because there are security guards at the gate. "Gates in our school are always closed. What shocked everyone most is that after our classmate was stabbed, the culprits did not bother to run but they walked as if nothing happened," the girl said. Other learners who spoke to ZiMoja said that they were still traumatised by the incident. "We are even scared to go to school unless we are assured that security will be tight. It's clear our lives are in danger if anyone can just walk inside the school premises, then a class and stab a learner,' the learner said. Another learner said that after the stabbing, they all thought that the victim would die as he was bleeding profusely. "It was scary and we all ran for our lives when they started stabbing, crying for help," she said.

DEPARTMENT TO INVESTIGATE

Department of Education Spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi said it was shocking that schools are continuing to be targets of criminals who want to rule our schools. " I have always maintained that schools are societal projects which do not need policing. We are shocked that an incident like this happened and surely the learners know the perpetrators. We will investigate and allow the cops to get to the bottom of it," he said.

NO CASE OPENED

KZN SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Nqobile Gwala said a learner believed to be 17-year-old was stabbed and wounded at school. "He was taken to a local clinic for medical attention. No case has been opened at the moment," she said. The teenager is recovering at home.
