Accused number 2 in the Senzo Meyiwa trial made an urgent bail application. He is one of five accused for the murder of Meyiwa in 2014.
They were charged with murder, attempted murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
Bongani Ntanzi's solo appearance was heard at the Pretoria High Court.
STATE OPPOSES BAIL
The 32 year old was identified as the man who had a scuffle with the late Bafana Bafana goalie. He was pin pointed in the gallery by Meyiwa's best friend, Tumelo Madlala, during his testimony at the trial. Ntanzi maintains that he was framed for Meyiwa's death and says he had nothing to do with it. The state's George Baloyi opposed bail for the accused stating that should he be released, he won't be in the province where the trial is. He added that the accused also made two statements where he confessed his involvement in the murder. "Ntanzi lied about his whereabouts on the day of the incident but his former manager from Sibanye Gold mine in the West Rand said there was no record of him clocking in," said Baloyi.
HE'S A BREADWINNER
Ntanzi's defence, TT Thobane argued that his client should be granted the R10 000 bail because he was the sole breadwinner in his family.
"He was the sole breadwinner before his arrest. I have a letter that says Ntanzi will be able to get employment when released on bail,” Thobane said. Thobane said Ntanzi has no passport or previous convictions, therefore the court will reach him whenever they need him.
His brother Mbongeleni testified as a character witness and told the court that Ntanzi was the bread winner to his two children that are currently being cared for by their uncle in KwaNongoma in KZN. He adds that eight other family members relied on Ntanzi to support them. The trial will resume on 14 November.
