With Operation Paseka initiative being launched across the country, Limpopo was not left behind. Limpopo MEC for Transport and Community Safety Florence Radzilani launched the the operation on the R71 outside Mankweng, next to Moria, on Wednesday with a roadblock. Radzilani also handed over reflector jackets to the provincial CPF, who will be trusted with stop and searches and other crime prevention activities comprising traffic police and the SAPS. Radzilani encouraged the police to work safely with pride. "We have a very huge responsibility to teach our people to love their own country and do what is right. Every time I hear that someone is being arrested it brings joy to my heart because it shows that the police officials are doing their job". In Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport, Kedibone Diale-Tlabela launched the provincial Easter road safety campaign on the Mabopane Highway R80 in Soshanguve on Tuesday.

ACCIDENTS

Gauteng Traffic spokesperson Sello Maremane said the province has over the past few years continued to record a rapid increase in the number of traffic crashes leading to fatalities. "It's against this backdrop that law enforcement agencies will continue with the efforts to monitor road users through collaborative and integrated heightened interventions measures," said. Maremane. He said the highest mortality rate was recorded amongst pedestrians ,which is attributable to amongst others: not wearing reflective gear at night, violation of traffic signals, distracted walking, distracted driving, using public road whilst under the influence of alcohol or drugs, jaywalking and many more others. "The notable increase in traffic flow in the province during the Easter period, leads to an increase in drunken driving, reckless and negligence, speeding amongst other all traffic contraventions some of which result in fatal crashes. It is for this reason that the Gauteng Traffic Police and various law enforcement agencies will embark on heightened law enforcement activities to ensure the safety of road users during this busy period," said Maremane. He added that Gauteng Traffic Police call upon road users to comply with the rules of the road in order to save lives during this Easter season period. "The law enforcement will not hesitate to act harshly against drivers who conduct themselves with impunity on Gauteng roads."
