Killed, mutilated and dumped in the street

Luyanda Cele was an intern at eThekwini Municipality

The family of a young graduate who went missing on Friday are still in disbelieve after her mutilated body was found dumped on a street in Durban CBD on Monday. Luyanda Cele (24) from Durban in KwaZulu Natal was last when she left her work place on Friday to go have  drinks with an unknown male friend.

GOING OUT FOR DRINKS

According to a flyer that was shared by her family and close friend, Luyanda informed one of her sisters that she was going to be late as she was going out for drinks with a male friend. That was the last time her family heard from her. When the family couldn't reach her, they started posting about her missing on social media and seeking help from the public. She was reported missing on Saturday and her mutilated body was found on Monday morning. Her lower lip and a tongue were missing.

FAMILY NOT READY TO TALK

When contacted, Luyanda's family said they were not ready to talk about her murder.  "We are requesting that you give us time to process everything as this is still fresh. We are not ready to talk about this now as Luyanda's body was only found yesterday. We will be in touch once we have digested everything," her sister Sithabile Cele said.

MURDERED

KZN SAPS spokesperson Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo confirmed the incident. "Police in Point are investigating a case of murder following an incident that occurred at Pixley KaSeme Street on Saturday,18 March 2022. It is alleged that a body of a woman was found lying on a passage between two buildings. She was later identified by her family and reports indicate that she was last seen on Friday, 17 March 2023. The motive for the killing is unknown," she said.
