Tomorrow more children will have a reason to smile as the 2nd Annual Pro Bono Dental Surgeries with Kids Dental Home Foundation will take place at the Nelson Mandela Children's Hospital in Johannesburg. Twenty kids with Early Childhood Caries, ECC , who cannot afford theatre fees, have been identified for this good cause. These children will have a new lease on life as they will be transformed for life and they will no longer have to face the wrath of other children laughing at them.
WHAT IS ECC?
ECC is a major oral health problem and constitutes a serious public health problem worldwide, mainly in socially disadvantaged populations. Even though it remains one of the most common childhood diseases, it is largely preventable. ?Kids Dental Home Foundation has announced that of the 20 beneficiaries, 14 have been confirmed to undergo surgery tomorrow.
READY TO GIVE A SMILE
Final preparations are underway to ensure success with these surgeries. "The Kids Dental Home Foundation sends its heartfelt gratitude to all the volunteer healthcare practitioners for their positive and prompt response," a statement from the foundation reads, adding that they recognise that oral health plays an important role in children, to maintain their oral functions. "It is required for eating, speech development and a positive image."
PRO BONO SURGERIES
The programme was started last year. Kids Dental Home Foundation established it to help children affected by ECC by performing pro bono surgeries on an annual basis. "This is done in commemoration of the World Oral Health Day. Last year alone, 10 kids benefitted from the programme." It's clear this programme is growing in leaps and bounds, meaning that more children will have a reason to smile.
