Joburg Mayor Thapelo Amad to face a motion of no-confidence

Opposition parties want Thapelo Amad to resign

ActionSA has submitted a motion of no-confidence against the City of Johannesburg Mayor Thapelo Amad after he said in a TV interview that he has secured a potential loan of R9.5 billion loan. According to Amad, the loan will be used as a cash injection for the city. The party also said they will file a motion against Council Speaker Coleen Makhubele due to her poor leadership. The motions will be tabled on 25 April 2023.

AMAD DOESNT UNDERSTAND THE BASIS OF THE LOAN

In a statement on Tuesday, ActionSA said that Amad has shown his inability to understand the basics of the loan agreement. "Mayor Amad, an expedient candidate between the ANC and EFF's coalition of doom, has repeatedly proven to be woefully ill-equipped and unable to articulate a coherent plan of action and vision for the City of Johannesburg,' the party said, adding that since his election earlier this year, service delivery in the city has rapidly deteriorated with heaps of rubbish pilling the streets. Amad was appointed mayor in January after the DA's Mpho Phalatse was voted out in a motion of no-confidence.

PATRIOTIC ALLIANCE SUPPORTS THE MOTION

In a social media post, Patriotic Alliance leader Gayton McKenzie conceded and called for Amad to resign. "We must put the citizens of Joburg first and admit we have backed the wrong horse. Amad has been asked to climb a mountain too high for him. It is not just harming Joburg, it is destroying him too. We will rectify this blunder. Amad should resign now. We apologise profusely,' he wrote.

SPEAKER USING ILL HEALTH AS AN EXCUSE

ActionSA has also accused Speaker Makhubele of using ill health as an excuse not to address her duties at the city council. "Speaker was spotted in the City of Tshwane on the same day where she is seen attending to internal COPE party squabbles. This is simply inexcusable, and the people of Johannesburg deserve better. While political differences may have characterised the tenure of previous mayors and speakers, it would be safe to say that residents and businesses are embarrassed by what the ANC and EFF have served up to lead the economic hub of our country,' the statement read.
