An inmate's pictures hit the trend list on Twitter after showing him in modified prison uniform. He is in a very cramped up prison cell filled with bunk beds covered with sheets that are used as curtains to maintain some privacy. Despite the fact that cellphones are not allowed in prison, the inmate went the extra mile of exposing himself on social media.
TO BE FORMALLY CHARGED
The Department of Correctional Service Spokesman Singabakho Nxumalo confirmed that the inmate was detained at St Albans Correctional facility in the Eastern Cape. However, Nxumalo explained that the inmate has since been moved to a Special Care Unit for the purposes of an investigation and will be formally charged. "Mobile phones are defined as contraband in correctional centres, hence illegal access and usage is a punishable offence. The said inmate will also face other charges for tailoring offender uniform as this is against DCS policies," said Nxumalo.
PEOPLE WEIGH IN
Social media users weighed in on this act with some claiming correctional services should discipline its staff because they are the middle men between inmates and the outside world.
Zola Mbatha said, "it's the fault of these shameless prison warders who degrade themselves to being errand boys for prisoners. Yet the most money they can get is R50, imagine losing your job because of this."
Mxolisi Ronald said, "Been to Johannesburg Correctional Services aka Sun City and I can tell you that most prisoners are good looking chaps, charming and very clean but hey..." Bhekithemba Zulu said, "All I know is he might get charged for possession of a phone inside a cell because of these pictures." The Monarch said,"most prisons have a higher prisoner to warden ratio, like a loss 1:35...Trust me, they can afford to let cellphones and drugs leak through the cracks if it keeps the prisoners calm."
