Nkosiyomusa Ndaba (8) was playing with his friends while watching a drag race from a distance outside his home in Etwatwa, Ekurhuleni on Sunday evening. In a blink of an eye, there was a loud bang, screams and cries for help. Within minutes, the badly injured body of little Nkosiyomusa was lying in the street, his friend Wandile Skosana was holding onto dear life while their two other friends and a couple who were closer to the scene survived unharmed but traumatised. They were treated for shock on the scene by emergency services personnel.
LOSING CONTROL
It's alleged two men, one in a white Toyota Etios and another in a white Nissan 1400 were illegally drag racing along the corner of Simunye Street and Madikizela Drive in Etwatwa. The driver of the Toyota Etios lost control of his car while driving at a high speed crashing into the four children and a couple.
MOB JUSTICE
The 50-year-old suspect who was trapped inside the car was dragged out and assaulted by the community and was later rescued by the police. The two cars were set alight by the angry mob while the second suspect managed to flee the scene on foot and is still on the run. An angry resident who didn't want to be named told ZiMoja that they continuously called the two men to refrain from racing on the residential street on that day. "Our warnings fell on deaf ears. They were driving at a high speed and refused to hear reason, the street was busy with children playing around. When they made their third cycle the driver lost control of the car att he curve and crashed into the children,' she said.
FAMILY DEVASTATED
Nkosiyomusa's aunt, Shelly Nkambule said the family is struggling to come to terms with the manner in which her nephew died. "His disfigured body was found trapped between a rubble of bricks and the Toyota Etios that crashed into him. 'The whole family is traumatised, I can't bring myself to walk out of the yard because I am haunted by the scene. It was horrific,' she said. Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police media liaison officer, Lt Colonel Kelebogile Thepa said two 12-year-old sustained injuries and was rushed to hospital together with the driver who was assaulted while three other pedestrians aged 12, 30 and 37 were treated for shock by emergency services at the scene.'We urge residents to report illegal street racing to the authorities immediately and refrain from taking the law into their own hands," Thepa said. A case of culpable homicide was opened by the EMPD at the Etwatwa SAPS police station.
