IEC mum after they failed to meet the Electoral Court deadline on Tuesday

IEC is still mum on the matter to file responding affidavits to the Umkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) application to set aside the elections results of May 2024.

REPLYING AFFIDAVITS

Last the Electoral Court ordered the IEC to file its replying affidavit by Tuesday at 6pm. The court said that it’s reserved the right to dispose of this matter on the papers without referral to oral hearing. The MKP asked the Electoral Court to declare the recent national and provincial elections were not free and fair. The MKP further requested that the Electoral Court must declare the elections invalid and to set aside the results.

MORE TIME

IEC Communications official Hlomani Baloyi said on Tuesday evening the organisation was still consulting. "We will file the responding affidavits but at the moment the IEC is still consulting. We are aware that the deadline is 6pm (Tuesday evening) but that does not matter as what is important is for us to respond today and send the affidavits to the relevant parties as soon as possible," he said. Early this week MKP spokesperson and Member of Parliament spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela said that they want the Electoral Court to consider their evident. "We presented concrete evidence to the IEC, showing widespread irregularities in the voting process and the voting system, it has all fallen on deaf ears. We’ve even approached the highest court in the land, but it rejected our pleas without even giving us a hearing and they’re relying on technicalities while the democracy itself is being destroyed," he said. MKP wants the Electoral Court to order President Cyril Ramaphosa to proclaim a new election date within 90 days of the court’s order.
