His time is up! eThekwini Deputy Mayor Philani "PG" Mavundla has been ousted from the ANC council through a vote during an eThekwini council meeting on Tuesday. The motion was first filed in writing by an ANC councillor in the municipality, Yolanda Young, and the EFF then supported it. "I have been waiting for this since I got into it. It was going to happen any day and that day has come. But I am okay.' Mavundla says while planning on challenging his removal.?

UNANIMOUS VOTES?

The removal of Mavundla took 125 votes supporting his removal: 59 opposing his removal and five parties abstaining from removing eThekwini's deputy mayor from the executive council on Tuesday. The controversial decision came after Mavundla turned to the Durban high court on Monday in an attempt to stop the ANC's bid to oust him after a thwarted full council meeting last week. The court ruled in Mavundla's favour but another meeting was called again on Tuesday where EFF and smaller parties were forced to remove the former ANC member from his post.?

eThekwini Municipality's Chief Whip of Council, Councillor Braveman Thembubuhle Ntuliresigned with immediate effect from his position. Ntuli followed the resignation of Executive Committee Member, Councillor Thanduxolo Sabela who hascreated an ANC vacancy in the Executive Committee. The resignation of Sabelaand the regain of the seat that had been allocated to Mavundla before hisremoval from the Deputy Mayor position left two ANC vacancies in the Executive Committee. Speaker Thabani Nyawose advised the council that the ANC haddetermined the name of Ntuli as filling one of the ANC vacancies in the Executive Committee. It was further noted that the ANC would determine the name of the councillor to fill the second vacancy in due course, and this will be noted accordingly at the next Council seating. Nyawose further advised that with the above-mentioned changes these will be filled in the next Council seating, inline with the provision of Schedule three: Election of Office Bearers, as contained in the Local Government: Municipal Structures Act. The speaker also announcedchanges to the eThekwini Municipal Council members that it had three Proportional Representative (PR) Councillor vacancies, from the African National Congress (ANC); Democratic Alliance (DA), and Action SA.
