It has always been his dream to host the Top 40 slot on 947 and his dream came true. But Zweli Mbhele hangs up his mic at the host of the much-loved chart.
MOVING ON
Sad to be moving on, Zweli says "This has been one of the most difficult decisions I’ve had to make in my life, and I’ve been here for almost 33 years," he says. "When I was 10 years old, I heard Brown Sugar do the Fanta World Top 40 and I fell in love with music radio and charts. Sureshnie, Adil, Mark Pilgrim, and Rob Vember
followed. I knew this was what I wanted but didn’t know how I would get there." The opportunity finally came for him in 2017. "When Mantsoe Pout and I would take over a huge show on 947, I genuinely couldn’t believe it and I still don’t sometimes," he says.
WHAT A JOURNEY
Zweli says the journey has been nothing short of amazing. "It’s been an incredible honour to make you happy and provide the soundtrack to your Saturday. There are so many things you can do on a day off and it means so much that you have chosen to listen to the radio, especially the Top 40," he says. "I absolutely hate letting go, but I have come to the decision that it’s time for me to let go of my baby, the 947 Top 40. I’ve cried for weeks because it’s so scary letting go of something that you love so much. I have poured my heart and soul into these shows," he adds. "We have had fun, interviewed some of the greatest artists, and fought about the movements and songs but mostly, built a show to remember. Sometimes you’ve got to close certain doors to open new ones. It’s scary but I believe it will happen."
