Various law enforcement units in Limpopo have uncovered an alleged firearm training facility at Modimolle and seized several firearms and ammunition.

TIP OFF

Hawk’s spokesperson, warrant officer Lethunya Mmuroa, explained that the Hawks Serious Organised Crime Investigation received a tip-off about the suspicious training camp at one of the farms in Modimolle. "A sting operation in collaboration with the public order police, local criminal record centre, tactical response team, and Modimolle Vispol was conducted, and several firearms and ammunition were seized," Mmuroa said. He said the teams seized licensed rifles, pistols, and ammunition believed to be used during training. "The purpose of the training is not yet clear, but the military-related training cannot be ruled out. The manner in which firearms and ammunition landed at the farm is still under investigation. No one was arrested," he added.

ILLEGAL CAMPS A THING?

Last month, a multi-disciplinary operation uncovered a camp on a secluded farm in White River in Mpumalanga and arrested 95 Libyans who were found in a bogus military school. In addition to the arrest, military-grade training equipment, drugs, and other contraband were discovered at the camp. The camp was found unaccredited by the authorities. The Libyans who used fake visas to get into the country appeared in court on Monday, and their case was postponed to 26 August for further police investigations. On Wednesday, the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority found that the camp was operating illegally. PSIRA CEO Manabela Chauke said the owners of Milites Dei Security Services had been served with suspension letters.
