Former Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court Sandile Ngcobo was robbed of a Rolex Watch worth R150 000 at gunpoint by the Rolex Gang recently. Zimoja can reveal that the former lawman, who retired from the bench in 2011, opened a case of armed robbery at Bramley Police Station, stating that the thugs also threatened to kill him when they were struggling to get the luxurious timepiece from his hand.

A LOUD BANG

According to Ngcobo's police statement, the robbers who were driving a Toyota Yaris, had followed him from Sandton City to his home in Sandhurst. At the time of the incident, Ngcobo said he was driving his Mercedez Benz, and he said believes that could be what attracted the robbers. He said even though he saw the car tailing him, he didn't suspect anything untoward. But he said he got the shock of his life when he heard a loud bang from the gate as soon as he had entered his home.            "Before I got into the garage, I heard a big bang from the back and I was approached by two African males, one on the passenger side and the other on the driver side. The man on the driver side was armed with a silver pistol and he smashed the window open and dragged me out of the car and demanded I give him my watch, " detailed Ngcobo in his police statement.

THEY SAID I SHOULD BE KILLED

Ngcobo said when the robbers were struggling to remove the watch from his hand, one of them said he must be killed. He said his life was only spared after the robbers succeeded to take the watch from him. He said after the watch was taken, the robbers fled. The lawman said he only sustained minor injuries on top of one of his eyes.  "No shots were fired," he said. Ngcobo was appointed the Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court in 2009 by former President Jacob Zuma, and he was deputised by Dikgang Moseneke, who also retired years later. He was replaced from the bench by Mogoeng Mogoeng as the head of the highest court in the land.
