Former Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates captain John "Dungi" Moeti died on Monday morning at the age of 55.
The news of his passing was announced by the South African Football Association (SAFA)on Monday morning.

In a statement released by the family through SAFA, spokesperson Victor Rakhale said Moeti has been sick for the past eight months. "It is with profound sadness and a deep sense of loss that we inform you of the passing of John Moeti. John suddenly took ill eight months ago and was receiving specialist medical care. He succumbed to his illness in the early hours of this morning at home, surrounded by his family and brethren in prayer. We thank you sincerely for your prayers and steadfast support. The family wishes to be afforded privacy during this time of loss and funeral details will be advised in due course," said Rakhale in the statement.

Moeti played at both professional and international levels as a midfielder. Moeti played club football for the Bucs and SuperSport United. He earned 29 caps for the South African national side Bafana Bafana between 1995 and 1999. Moeti won the CAF Champions League in 1995 when Pirates defeated ASEC Mimosas of Ivory Coast in the final. He was part of the squad that won the 1996 African Cup of Nations.

Safa president Dr Danny Jordaan wished healing thoughts and comfort to the family. "The association and I wish to convey our sincerest condolences and heartfelt sorrow to the family and friends of Dungi Moeti. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, loved ones and friends," he said.
