The family of a 19-year-old teenager who died while with her boyfriend is seeking answers. Nonkah Mgwaba, from Chesterville outside Durban in KwaZulu-Natal, died in the hospital after she allegedly jumped out of her boyfriend’s moving vehicle last week Monday.

SEEKING ANSWERS

Nonkah’s older sister, Buyisile Mthembu (32) said the family believes there is more to her death than what they are being told. "My sister was at home on Saturday afternoon when her boyfriend came and picked her up to accompany him to his friend’s place not far from our place. We were surprised when the boyfriend came back alone to inform us that Nonkah had jumped out of a moving car," Mthembu said. "He told us that when he stopped the car to check on her, he could not find her," she said. "According to Mthembu, the boyfriend claimed they never fought before she threw herself out of a moving car. "He claimed he was also shocked when she jumped out of the car. We waited on Sunday to see if she was going to come back home, but she never did. On that same night, we decided to go to the Chesterville police station to open a missing person charge," she said.

POWER OF SOCIAL MEDIA

Mthembu said that on Monday, she decided to take to social media to post about the missing Nonkah. "It wasn’t until Monday when I posted Nonkah on the Chesterville Page that I received a call from an official who works at King Edward Hospital who informed me that the girl I had posted was admitted on Sunday badly injured. She checked for me in her ward only to find out she passed away on Monday night," she said. KZN SAPS spokesperson Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo confirmed that the police in Westville are investigating a case of culpable homicide. "This comes after an incident in which a 19-year-old girl sustained injuries from an accident that occurred at Westville on June 29, 2024. She was taken to a nearby hospital for medical attention, and she later died at the hospital," she said.
