Students wants answers after one of them passed away during a stampede at the freshers ball.
STAMPEDE
Carol Mabunda (20), a student at the Tshwane University of Technology passed away on Friday during a stampede that occurred at Rand Campus in Pretoria.
Mabunda was an active Economic Freedom Fighters Students Commands (EFFSC) passed away after other students ran over her when she fell off the ground during an event that was held at the Pretoria Main Campus.
EFFSC Chairperson Albert "BreakFast" Mahlalela confirmed the incident by blamed the university for Mabunda?s death.
"The security personnel that was provided by the university was very poor and they were not properly trained to handle the crowd. Students had to wait for two hours at the gates to get tickets to the stadium where the event was held. They became angry and began pushing their way inside the venue. This is where Mabunda fell down and some students walked over her while she lying down," he said.
Mahlalela said that what pisses them off is that TUT does not want to take responsibility for her death.
"When we ask the TUT to conduct the post event investigation and analysis, they are refusing to do so instead they are putting the blame on the Students Representative Council (SRC) for poor event organising of the event. They should have provided enough security since the venue hosts 10 000 people. The logistics were very poorly arranged and someone must account for the death of Carol," he said.
GREAT LOSS
On Thursday, the EFFSC held a memorial service for Mabunda at Madeira residence.
"We listened to our members and taken note of the complaints voiced by the movement?s ground forces, and as a result, we are determined to fulfill both your needs and the needs of the TUT student body. We are deeply saddened by the untimely passing of Carol who was doing her 2nd year in contact centre management. We will thus work together with relevant parties to ensure that those who need to be held accountable actually do account," he said.
