The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema is threatening to take legal action against KwaZulu Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. Malema was addressing protesters at Church Square in Tshwane before marching to the Union Building.

 LEGAL ACTION

Addressing his supporters on Monday afternoon about the shutdown, Malema said that they will be taking legal action against KwaZulu Natal police commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. "We are going to take the KwaZulu Natal police commissioner to court for saying they will abandon the police service and go into combat. He got too excited in one of the press conferences. He said they have abandoned the police service and are going into combat, the police service is not his underwear that he will change it as he pleases,' Malema added.  Malema was referring to comments made by Mkhwanazi on Friday where he said the police are in "combat mode' and ready to deal with any acts of anarchy that may arise during the National Shutdown. He went on to accuse Ronald Lamola and Fikile Mbalula of suffering from political jealousy. "They are suffering from political jealousy, they will never be able to do something like this," he said.

SHUTDOWN WAS A SUCCESS

Malema said the shutdown was a success. "The topic is not whether there was looting or not. There is no looting or burning of property. All EFF members and supporters of the national shutdown did so in a dignified manner,' he said. Malema said the shutdown went well despite intimidation by law enforcement. "We have been subjected to apartheid tactics for the last three days because of Bheki Cele, so he must know that all of those tactics have not worked. Businesses listened to me and not Ramaphosa when he said it will be business as usual but no factory, schools, shops were opened today, all of them are closed." he added.

DISCIPLINED

The EFF's Ndlozi asked the crowd to remain disciplined. "There are no commuters because our people have responded positively to the call that it's a stay-away. Now the police have been shooting people everywhere for demonstrations. They've been shooting people who are demonstrating peacefully, unarmed South Africans. So, it's a very peaceful thing, we remain by the square. We don't get provoked by the uniform.'

 WASTED RESOURCES

Meanwhile Police Minister Bheki Cele said the EFF's national shutdown was nothing. "We just realised that the police wasted their resources. We must be grateful for their outstanding work. We only saw few people, they were less than 100 and they were in Alexandra," Cele said.
