The Scottburgh Regional Court in the Ugu District, KwaZulu Natal has sentenced a 46-year-old man to two life imprisonment for raping his two stepdaughters for years.
REPORTING THE RAPES
The man started raping his two stepdaughters when they were still in primary school mostly when their mother was at work. He was arrested in 2019 when they eventually reported the rapes to their cousin who told their mother and a medical doctor. During the trial, prosecutor Akhile Gcume handed in a victim impact statement compiled by one of the girls and facilitated by court Preparation Officer, Nokukhanya Mkhize. In her statement the girl said that she and her sister had trusted the man and treated him as a father figure, but he broke their trust. She said that she now lives like a recluse and is also performing poorly at school.
NPA WELCOMES SENTENCE
KZN Regional Spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara said the National Prosecuting Authority welcomed the successful finalisation of the matter. “This affirms our commitment to curbing the scourge of rape and sexual offences. "We commend the work done by the Prosecution and SAPS," Ramkisson-Kara said.
