Department of Health cautions against new COVID variant

The public has been asked to be extra cautious after the discovery of a highly transmissible Covid-19 variant

The first case of a coronavirus infection caused by the new highly transmissible XBB.1.5 variant has been found in South Africa. Covid-19 technical lead at the World's Health Organisation (WHO), Maria Van Kerkhove says that the XBB.1.5 variant also nicknamed "kraken variant" is the most transmissible sub-variant" detected so far in the pandemic.

THE NEW VARIANT

WHO reports that the new variant was discovered in gene sequencing carried out by researchers at the Stellenbosch University from a December 27 sample. Head of a gene sequencing institute at the university, Tulio de Oliveira, shared on Twitter that the XBB.1.5 has quickly become the dominant strain in the US and has been detected in at least 28 other countries."First XBB.1.5 detected in SA  by Stellenbosch University, Network for Genomics Surveillance in South Africa(NGS-SA). XBB.1.5 = 1% (1/97 of recent genomes). Isolate from 27-Dec-2022.Interesting, two others assigned as BA.2.75 with extra Spike F486P mutation," de Oliveira says. "At present, no increase in cases, hospitalisation or deaths. NGS-SA increasing genomics surveillance in South Africa. Our labs also support dozens of other African countries as part of Africa CDC PGI program."

BE CAUTIOUS

The National Department of Health South is appealing to everyone to get vaccinated for COVID-19, and those who have gone to go and get boosters, wear your masks, keep the distance, avoid overcrowded places and wash your hands. "The department of health is currently in discussions with scientists to gather more information including its transmissibility and severity. Thus, an official communication will be made in due course." They are closely monitoring the COVID-19 situation in China and other parts of the world and will issue an alert if the country needs to take extra precautions. They explained that there is no panic however people need to be alert. "There is no need for panic. We urge people to vaccinate and get booster shots to enhance their immunity."

THE FIRST CASE OF XBB.1.5

Reports state that there is concern over the rapid spread of Covid in China following the recent easing of strict lockdown measures. It's reported that hospitals across the country are under pressure amid a fresh wave of infections following 13 Covid deaths throughout December. Currently the official count has recorded an estimated 5,000 cases a day.
