Democratic Alliance leader John Steenhuisen remains the leader of the party. The re-elected Steenhuisen fought it out with former Joburg mayor, Dr Mpho Phalatse for the top seat. More than 2000 delegates attended the congress held in Midrand. Helen Zille retained her position as DA Chair.
SAVE SA
After securing 83 per cent of the votes at the two-day DA Federal Congress, Steenhuisen appealed to opposition parties and civil society to save South Africa. "South Africans expect us to step up and be the alternative in South Africa. The DA must take a bold step and lead the mutual pact which will keep the EFF out and topple the ANC on their doomsday alliance... it's time to join a moonshot which will work for the better South Africa."
WORKING TOGETHER
Steenhuisen further appealed for a dialogue on how they can work together. "We must make a date and meet and discuss an alternative pact. We must discuss on how to outvote the EFF, which involves the ANC. The DA is now 12% behind the ANC. I believe that we can overtake the ANC in 2024 if we govern all the provinces. We have proven that the DA can govern better by the Western Cape. The province is by far less in percentage in terms of unemployment. If the people can vote for the DA, they will have a better future. The DA needs the coalition government but we must retain our majority. I know many of you remain sceptical of the coalition government but the DA is taking a lead in having a coalition government. We have learnt from past experiences that we need to have a moonshot pact."
VISION
He further said that their vision is to keep the ANC and the EFF out. "This vision is the first price for the DA and for the South Africans to make sure that doomsday coalitions do not work. A vote for the DA will help better the lives of the South Africans. Fellow South Africans, the future is all we are working for. People must vote for the DA like their lives depends on it. South Africa is a wonderful place and it is worth to fight for," Steenhuisen said to much applaud
