KHAYELITSHA- The police have killed eight would-be robbers and arrested five following a foiled CIT robbery in Town Two, Khayelitsha. The would-be robbers were caught off guard by a multi-disciplinary team that had been following up on information about a possible cash in transit robbery. Police said as the teams approached the suspects, the would-be robbers started firing shots at police, who then retaliated. On the scene, the police confiscated various calibers of firearms and ammunition.
LIMPOPO- Following a string of operations in Limpopo between the 29th of July and the 5th of August, the police managed to arrest 954 suspects, including 400 undocumented nationals. The arrested suspects face charges including murder, attempted murder, carjacking, undocumented immigration, drug-related offences, theft and robbery, assault and rape. Police further confiscated various types of drugs, such as dagga, heroin and nyaope, counterfeit goods and suspected stolen properties, among others.
MPUMALANGA- Mpumalanga police have launched a manhunt for the killers of former police union executive member Nkosinathi Theledi. Theledi’s body was discovered in his car in Mbombela five days ago after he was last seen on the 31st of August leaving his home in Gauteng. The police were alerted by family when they couldn’t reach him on both his cellphones, which were stolen along with his watch and shoes. No arrests have been made and the police are appealing to anyone with information to come forward.
NORTHERN CAPE- Simangele Sangweni made a brief appearance at the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court facing allegations of fraud, alternative theft, forgery and uttering, as well as money laundering. The 32-year-old was arrested yesterday in New Castle, KwaZulu-Natal, by the Hawks Serious Commercial Crime Investigation. According to the Hawks, the accused misrepresented themselves and misled the municipality by submitting fraudulent change of banking details letter and invoices to Phokwane Municipality while purporting to be Vaalharts Water, a service provider of the municipality. The municipality paid over R450 000 to the business account of the accused. In 2021, the accused did the same thing but changed the name of her business and submitted a fraudulent change of banking details letter and invoices to Frances Baard District Municipality while purporting to be Sedibeng Water, a service provider of the municipality. She was paid over R460 000. The case is postponed to Tuesday, 13 August 2024, for formal bail application. Sangweni remains in custody.
