The power utility has said unsuspecting job seekers have fallen prey to criminals posing as City Power. Speaking to Zimoja City Power spokesman Isaac Mangena said although there are job opportunities currently, they have noticed opportunists who are trying to use their legitimate process to con job seekers. "The job advert doing rounds looking for the Electrician (Shift Worker), Ref 001, which is also carried in SMSes, is fake, not from City Power and should be ignored," said Mangena.
JOBS FOR CASH
Mangena explained that it's unfortunate that City Power has a similar post which can be verified on their website.
"The only posts advertised by City Power are those of Electrician (Shift Worker), Ref 001 and Trade Worker for internal employees only," he said. He said people should watch out for crime is prevalent and the job market is no exception. he high unemployment rate in South Africa has contributed to the criminals taking advantage of those desperate for jobs.
NO METER INSTALLATION
City Power has also warned against those claiming to residents of Vlakfontein Phumulamqashi near Eldorado Park will be getting new meters. City Power has warned the residents of Vlakfontein and Phumlamqashi to be alert of an ongoing scam in the communities, which notifies residents of a possible new meter installation. Mangena said the utility was aware of the fake notice that has been circulating among the two areas in Region G. "The badly-written note, which is not even on an official City Power letterhead, seems to seek to solicit money from the residents in exchange of the meters."
CRIMINAL CHARGES
Mangena explained that the notice further demanded a registration fee of R250, along with a full cost installation fee amounting to R1,250 and personal information from the residents.
"We urge residents to ignore this notice because we currently don't have projects in their area. When we do we will engage with the councillor as well as all relevant stakeholders who will help us engage with the community."
Mangena said they will inform law enforcement about this and should the culprit be identified they will face criminal charges.
